Mask

An actor sick of his high-profile and constantly documented life applies prosthetics to himself in hope of hiding himself. My short film which takes influence from french directors such as Jean-Luc Godard and Gaspar Noe while at the same time conveying a narrative which deals with duality and identity crisis. The monochrome cinematography is meant for a homage to early french new wave cinema with many of the filming techniques I used in the film being adopted from the filming techniques of the french new wave period such as natural lighting, filming on locations rather than sets, experimental editing and a classical score. I tried to put limitations on myself during the production while also adhering to a schedule. This has been a big learning curve for me and it was an enjoyable exercise to work with the bare bones of equipment as well as filming under government COVID-19 restrictions. Overall I’m happy with the final cut of the film although I’m sure I’ll come back to it at some stage to do a remake of it with a more polished script and with a longer cut of the film.
