Ireland has been a pioneer of LGBTQIA+ rights in recent years. With this increasing awareness of the LGBTQIA+ community, it brings people becoming more comfortable to come out at a younger age. However, there is a lack of resources and touchpoints for both young people and parents to access for support to handle what can be difficult conversations. This is what drives this campaign, Só. The initiative provides a hub of information and support relating to LGBTQIA+ topics for both parents and young people to access online and physically in community spaces.
The brief I chose from the ISTD selection was Brief 3, Linguistic Hybridity. As I researched Ireland’s history with the Irish language and Britain’s influence over the language during their ruling over the country, I uncovered connections between the Hiberno-English spoken throughout the country and the Irish Literary Revival, one of the first instances of literary rebellion against the English language. This publication aims to provide some context to Ireland’s tumultuous history with language, which coincides with some impactful cultural events such as the Irish Literary Revival, and inform readers the effects it has had on the blended language we speak in Ireland today.
